Polish Government Decides Against Censorship

Not so long ago, the Polish government announced their plan for censorship of the Internet, which included, amongst other things such as certain forms of pornography, online gambling censorship. This censorship was set to be put in place from the level of the Internet Service Providers.

After the announcement was made, Polish citizens on a grassroots level got together and protested the impending censorship. The Polish people did not like the fact that their government was planning to make their decisions for them, as to which sites are considered good or safe, and harmful or offensive to them.

Facebook was one of the social networks that was used as a tool to get the word around, and to gain support for the protest to the Polish government. The people also formed political action committees, set up to try and ensure that freedom is not taken away from Polish citizens.

Once there had been an outcry, and the government realized that they did not have the support of the people, a statement that was released by the Polish Parliament noted that the proposed censorship was not constitutional. Prime Minister Donald Tusk acted swiftly to agree lo let go of the proposed censorship, and seems to be lucky enough that with his quick move, he has not created a “major public relations disaster.”

Prime Minister Tusk did not arbitrarily make the decision to scrap the proposed legislation. He first met with various non-governmental organizations to discuss the issues regarding the possible Internet censorship. The change in direction as far as this piece of legislation is concerned is more than a small victory for Polish citizens. It shows what the power of the people can, in fact, bring about changes.

At this time, the future of Internet gambling in Poland is still somewhat questionable, since Poland would prefer keep this market to themselves. Meanwhile, Polish citizens can continue to enjoy online gambling through foreign online casino sites.
